After years of self employment and experiencing the stress and long hours that can come with this path, I needed a change. So, for the past seven years I’ve been doing heavy industrial construction as a union member. I joined the union because the benefits were good, the pay was great and the pension looked better than anything I’d seen. During this time I married a long time friend and we had three beautiful children - all this while I was living in camps and the homes of strangers in Fort McMurray.

 

About three years ago, I came to the realization that this job also held a bleak future that clearly fell short of my dreams. Then one fateful day a gentleman attended one of our safety meetings and shared the human decision making process with us. It was all very scientific and heavily backed by studies, but the one thing he said that hit home was, “Your best thinking has got you where you are today!” I’ve always considered myself to be a great thinker, so after hearing this I was disheartened with where I’d put myself in life, and thus began my search for a way out!

 

Change must have been in the air because my parents were also trying some new things. They attended a Fast Track to Cash Flow seminar where they met and spoke with Darren Weeks. They purchased some Rich Dad books and tools and when I was scheduled to leave for Fort McMurray they handed me the books to read.

 

I read Rich Dad Poor Dad in three days and Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing in four days. I was so blown away by the content that I badgered my parents about the seminar they attended and immediately signed up for the weekend event. After that I signed up for an evening introduction to Fast Track seminar as well.

 

After reading the books and finding a community of like-minded thinkers, my wife and I decided to take the leap and face our fears head-on with the goal of living a life built upon our dreams.

 

A friend and I had an import car magazine idea that had been brewing. In fact, it had been worked on by others, but nobody wanted to take on the project or fund it because it was very time consuming and expensive. My wife and I worked on the numbers, looked at the steep learning curve ahead and decided it would be better to do the magazine than live a life of fear and unfulfilled dreams.

 

We’re now on our third issue and revenue is starting to roll in. Although we’d never created a magazine before, it was a smash hit right from the first issue. The second issue was grabbed up within the first week of distribution and even after printing more copies; it left many crying readers without a magazine.

 

The magazine is called Import Only and our website is www.importonly.com. It’s a magazine for import car lovers and enthusiasts; and, we’ve been told by pros in the business that the layout is one of the best and classiest they’ve ever seen. The magazine is a first on many levels. It’s the only high-end car magazine in Canada, the only high-end import car magazine in all of North America, the only import car magazine in Alberta, the only car magazine in Edmonton and Calgary and it’s the first business I’ve created using the BI triangle as a framework (and the first business I’ve started with the B quadrant in mind from the start).

 

I couldn’t have achieved this without the support of the Fast Track community, Darren and his team’s consistently uplifting events. These events not only educate and bring like-minded people together, but they also create an atmosphere that helps people through the sometimes challenging learning process with support and enthusiasm. I’ve met and spoken with Darren and many Fast Track attendees and I’m always learning. Everyone who attends these events has very good bits of advice to offer, which makes them an excellent starting point for anyone interested in true personal growth and breaking free from the Rat Race.

 

I’ve come to understand that it’s not really about attaining the actual goal since this is just a marker on the path to continual learning. When you reach that goal you once thought was unattainable, it provides you with valuable insights into how much more you can and need to learn - and how much you need to help others. The magazine is just a magazine; it’s really about how much more life I have open to me now. Anything is within the realm of possibility and now I would like to help others on their journey towards something more.
